About Nyanga

Culture as a source of awareness and connection.

Nyanga Weder is a cultural creator and specialist in Afro-Surinamese culture, dance and education.

Nyanga Weder is a cultural creator and specialist in Afro-Surinamese culture, dance and education. Her personal background and family history — influenced by both Maroon culture and Suriname’s plantation culture — gave her a strong connection to heritage and identity. From primary school onwards, she engaged with Surinamese culture and sought to give it a place throughout her education.

While studying Cultural Studies at the University of Amsterdam, Nyanga noticed that there was little room for perspectives that reflected her lived experience. This motivated her to help make art and education more inclusive.

Through her workshops, talks and Keti Koti programmes, she makes the Dutch history of slavery and its continuing impact accessible and tangible. Using dance, storytelling and cultural expression, she creates space for awareness, connection and empowerment. Nyanga builds a bridge between past and present, helping people understand how history continues to shape the here and now while experiencing and appreciating the strength and beauty of different cultures.
